Dr. McGhan is Professor of Pharmacy and Health Policy in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration, at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. He is founding director of the USP Graduate Program in Pharmacy Administration. He is also one of the founders of the USP graduate programs emphasizing health policy and pharmaceutical business.
He obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy and clinical residency training from the University of California, San Francisco. After completing his initial pharmacy degree, he became Pharmacy Director of the thirteen state Appalachian Student Health Project. He then served in Washington, DC for five years on the executive staff of the American Pharmaceutical Association, and became director of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He was then awarded an AFPE fellowship for his Ph.D. training in economics and administration at the University of Minnesota.
He next joined the faculty at the University of Southern California where he was director of evaluation for the innovative program of drug prescribing by pharmacists. Then he was recruited to the University of Arizona where he was one of the founders of the UofA center for pharmacoeconomics. At the UofA College of Pharmacy he was promoted to professor and served as coordinator for the Division of Administrative Sciences.
Dr. McGhan has generated substantial amounts of outside funding as principal investigator on numerous grants and contracts. He has authored several books as well as over 200 journal articles and chapters. He is a past President of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science and has served on the board of directors of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
He has been a co-recipient of the Lyman award for outstanding research articles published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. He was the recipient of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists' highest honor, the Archambault Award, for outstanding professional contributions. He is an elected Fellow of the AAPS in recognition for his distinguished scientific contributions and leadership. He was the founding President of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR). Memberships include the AAUP, ISPOR, AACP, AAPS, ASHP and APhA.
He is a speaker and consultant for numerous companies and organizations around the world. His research focuses on decision analysis, outcomes research, and clinical economics.
