Synopsis

Dr. Murphy received his BA degree from Towson State University and his MA and PhD degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park. He arrived at University of the Sciences in August 2009 after fifteen years in the Midwest. He teaches a variety of Asian subjects, including Modern Japan, Modern China, The Atomic Bomb in Film and History, and Introduction to East Asia. On the American side, he teaches the American Civil War, and The American Frontier in Film and History.

His research interests deal with the intersection of culture. He is working on his third book, a study of the Bataan Death March from the point of view of the Japanese.

He has travelled widely, and has visited more than thirty countries, many in Asia. He has received grants to attend faculty development seminars in China, Vietnam and India, and he recently spent four months in Thailand. He has circumnavigated the world twice on the University of Pittsburgh’s “Semester at Sea” program, teaching Asian history as the ship visited numerous ports. He lived in Japan for more than four years and has returned many times.
